Lewis Pugh, a British endurance swimmer, completed a 315-mile (500 km) journey along the Hudson River in New York on Wednesday, highlighting his decades-long successful cleanup efforts and setting an example for other waterways.
"This was one of the most polluted rivers in the world 50 years ago," said the 53-year-old Pugh, who was appointed the United Nations' first Ocean Advocate a decade ago.
"We need clean, healthy rivers," he told reporters after completing the unassisted journey from the source of the Hudson River to New York City.
He mentioned that during New York's industrial era, the river would sometimes change color daily depending on the dyes and other pollutants being dumped or discharged.
But after decades of pollution cleanup efforts, Pugh was able to safely swim down the river, a month-long feat he hopes will inspire others.
"They will be inspired by what happened here and say to themselves, 'If they can do it in the Hudson River, we can definitely do it in our rivers, our rivers can also be saved,'" he said.
Pugh has previously swum high-profile swims in Antarctica, the Arctic, and the Red Sea to advocate for rivers clean enough to swim and fish safely.
As Pugh completed his Hudson River feat, global leaders were preparing to gather in New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly, where they will formally sign a historic High Seas Treaty.
